HA HA!
Another wedding guest look and nothing exudes elegance quite like a saree. As a wedding guest, styling your saree thoughtfully can make you stand out while respecting the sanctity of the occasion. Here are some ideas to help you drape and accessorize your saree perfectly.
Choose the Perfect Fabric for the Event
Choosing the right fabric for a saree is key to defining your look. For traditional weddings, opt for silk sarees. They offer a regal and rich appearance . Kanjeevaram, Banarasi, or Mysore silk sarees are classic choices. Georgette or chiffon sarees are ideal for destination or modern weddings. These fabrics are lightweight and easy to drape. Organza and net sarees are great for evening receptions or cocktail events. They add a touch of glamour with their delicate texture.
Play with Colors and Prints
Color selection can make or break your look. Tips to keep in mind before you pick the saree:
Opt for bright jewel tones like emerald green, royal blue, or deep maroon for day weddings. Pastels and metallic hues are perfect for evening events to add a contemporary twist. Avoid wearing red or heavy bridal tones unless specified in the dress code. These colors are traditionally reserved for the bride.
Experiment with Draping Styles
Gone are the days of sticking to classic drapes. Experimenting with modern and regional draping styles gives you more options for styling. Want a Belted drape? Then cinch your saree with a statement belt for a structured look. Love Bengali or Gujarati drape? Then go for it: These traditional styles add a unique flair. Fan of Cape-style drape. Pair your saree with a cape blouse for a fusion-inspired look.
Pick the Perfect Blouse
The blouse can transform your saree from simple to stunning. Consider Cold-shoulder or halter neck designs for a modern vibe. Elaborate embroidery, aari, or sequins for a festive touch. Full-sleeve or high-neck blouses for a vintage-inspired look.
Accessorize with Elegance
Your accessories should complement, not overpower, your saree. Jewelry: Choose a statement necklace or earrings, but not both. Opt for traditional pieces like jhumkas or temple jewelry for a classic look. Clutch: A small, embellished potli bag or a metallic clutch can complete the ensemble. Footwear: Heels or embellished juttis pair beautifully with sarees.
Hairstyles and Makeup
Your hairstyle and makeup should align with the vibe of your saree. For traditional sarees, try a bun adorned with fresh flowers. For modern looks, go for soft curls, or a sleek ponytail. Keep makeup subtle with a focus on one feature: bold lips or dramatic eyes.
Layer with Contemporary Touches
Add a modern twist to your saree by pairing it with a jacket-style blouse or a long shrug. You can add a belt or corset to accentuate your waist. Need a fusion look then drape saree over pants or a lehenga skirt.
I curated my wedding guest look by draping this beautiful, green banasari silk saree with traditional goan jewelry. Pakke hair accessory, pakke haar and nath gelled gorgeously with my saree and were a match made in heaven. This statement piece gave a unique touch to my look for a south Indian wedding.
As said earlier, the saree blouse design equally enhances the whole look. So, got the blouse tailored to new trends that fit me comfortably. Plus we all know how the touch of aari work transforms a simple blouse into a masterpiece. I was happy with the elegance and richness of the blouse after designing this cute aari pattern on the neck, back, and the sleeves. Take a look at pics below.

I opted for a hairstyle that suited well with the pakke hair accessory. However, a bun and the navari define the goan traditional look. I had to opt for something quicker to get into my heels. Bun hairstyle and navari drape are a little tricky and I would need help. So had to drop the idea.
The green glass bangles were the classic match for my saree. The gold clutch and comfortable kitten heels were my go-to picks with no doubt at all.
I am pretty obsessed with the pink shades so wore it again. Plus, these went well with the green saree. Subtle makeup with a touch of pink lips was just right for a dashing desi girl look.
I hope you liked my classic look as a wedding guest.
